More detail on this person: Herbert Myers Wagenheim, age 86, passed away at Huntsville Hospital on Friday, March 12, 2021. Born in Wheeling, WV on January 22, 1935, son of the late Herbert Charles Wagenheim and Virginia Myers Wagenheim, he is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jane Lawler Wagenheim; son, Dr. Herbert Riggs Wagenheim, DVM (Lavanda) of Tuscaloosa; daughters, Virginia Wagenheim Parks (Sam) of Tuscaloosa, Diana Lynn Hyde of Huntsville and Sindy Sanderson Horner (Perry) of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Marla Evelyn Parks, Shelley Elizabeth Parks, Caldwell Riggs Wagenheim and Sarah Virginia Wagenheim, all of Tuscaloosa, Lauren Nicole Scott (Blake) of Florence, Haley Ann Steele (Zak), and Russell Thomas Hyde of Huntsville, Kyle Perry Horner, Peyton Elise Horner and Luke William Horner, all of Tampa, FL; great- grandchildren, Madison Jane Scott and Mack Thomas Scott of Florence; brother, Don Alden Wagenheim (Linda) of Wheeling, WV; and niece, Kristin Wagenheim Coda (Duane) of Mountain Lakes, NJ. After graduating from Linsly Military Institute in Wheeling, WV, Herb entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY as a 17-year-old Plebe, participated on the lacrosse and swim teams, graduated with the Class of 1956 and went on to receive a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Alabama. He began his 20-year military service with Flight School at Ft. Benning, GA, where he received his pilot and helicopter training, with subsequent posts in St. Louis, Mannheim, Germany, Denver, and as the Chief Financial Officer at West Point and his final station at Redstone Arsenal. He served in the Vietnam War in 1967-68 and received the Meritorious Service Award. After retiring from the Army in 1976 at the rank of Lt. Col., he pursued a second career with Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville. Herb was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. A devoted and loyal son, he called his parents faithfully every week. He loved his miniature Schnauzer, Jake; cat, Schatzi; as well as previous dogs, Wag, Max, and Joe, the Beagle. He was a true patriot and loved his country, the US Army, and stayed connected with his West Point classmates. He loved getting together with other retired Army buddies to watch the Army-Navy game every year and never wavered in his allegiance as an avid Alabama football fan in spite of living in a house full of Auburn fans. He enjoyed flying small airplanes, sailing, and sharing his love of model trains with his grandsons. His extensive book collection of American History was a topic of good-natured ribbing by his family as it overflowed from his study into other areas of the house. He and his wife, Jane, both enjoyed playing golf well into their seventies with their wide circle of friends at Valley Hills Country Club. He was a member of Latham United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 19 at 1:00 pm at Laughlin Service Funeral Home with a receiving of friends beginning at 12:00 pm and a private graveside burial following at Maple Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Sparkman of Latham United Methodist Church presiding. Editor's Corrections: LTC Wagenheim received his pilot and helicopter training as follows: U.S. Army Fixed Wing class 57-9 at Camp Gary, TX and Fort Rucker, AL in 1957. He received Instrument fixed wing Flight training in Hutchinson, KS in 1958. He attended U.S. Army Helicopter Flight School with class 59-2 at Camp Wolters, TX in 1958.
