Stewart Whisnant, 86, of Smiths Station, AL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at Columbus Hospice House.A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am EST on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, with Pastor Tony R. Dickerson officiating. Mr. Whisnant was born in Granite Falls, NC the son of the late Lonar C. Whisnant and Carrie Lee Brown Whisnant. He retired from the US Army as a helicopter pilot having served one tour in Vietnam. He was manager of the Ft. Benning Flying Club and past President of East Alabama Gem and Mineral Society. He was a member of Smiths Station Baptist Church.Other than his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, of 61 years, Betty Kincaid Whisnant, three brothers, Vern, Ned and Owen Whisnant and a sister Nina Wheeler.He is survived by 2 daughters, Cathy (husband Rodney Blake Murphy) and Mary; 5 grandchildren, Jason, Kevin, Brandon, Christopher and Ashley; numerous great grandchildren; devoted longtime friends Rose Marie Evans, Ken and Shirley Donley; extended family and many caring friends.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Columbus Hospice or the Gardens at Calvary in Stewart Whisnant's memory.Published in Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
