More detail on this person: James Toby White, age 78, of Savannah, passed away at his home on March 26, 2015 after a long illness. James was born in Lyons, GA, on June 27, 1936 to the late Willie and Orene White. A native of Toombs County, James was a 1955 graduate of Toombs Central High School. At the age of 18, he moved to Miami, FL, where he met and married his wife Brenda Goodman in 1957. He joined the United States Army in 1957 and served for thirty years having attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. His assignments and positions of responsibility while in the Army included Chinook Pilot, Instructor Pilot, and Test Pilot. During his service, he served two combat tours in Vietnam, and served in numerous other areas, both foreign and domestic. His assignments included Germany, Korea, Fort Benning, GA, Barbers Point, HI, Fort Eustis, VA, Fort Rucker, AL, Fort Walters, TX, Fort Campbell, KY, and finally retiring from Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah. Subsequent to his retirement, he joined the firm of Lockheed Martin as a CH-47 Chinook Helicopter Test Pilot. His military awards and decorations include The Legion of Merit, The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Purple Heart, The Bronze Star, The Bronze Star with V-Device for Valor, four Air Metals, Meritorious Service Metal (12 Oak Leaf Clusters), The Army Commendation Metal (16 Oak Leaf Clusters), The Broken Wing Award, The Master Aviator Badge, and a number of campaign service ribbons. James was preceded in death by not only his parents, but also sister Margaret Pete Jones, and sister Willie Mae Petesy Smith. James is survived by his wife of 58 years Brenda Goodman White, daughter Shirley White Bolch (Eddie) of Savannah, son Robert White (Sandra) of Naples, FL, grandchildren Trevor and Sophia White, siblings Delila Stephens, Jerald Newey White (Shirley), Bessie Halter, and Johnny White, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 3-5pm on Sunday at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel in Savannah. Memorial Services will be held at 12pm noon on Monday in the chapel of Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel with Pastor James Ellis Boyd officiating. Funeral Service will be held at 12pm on Tuesday at Providence Baptist Church in Lyons, GA, with visitation being held from 11am - 12pm. Pastor Michael Plowman will officiate. Burial will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. Savannah Morning News March 29, 2015
