Wiley was born in Orange, New Jersey on Feb. 12,
1933, he was raised in Rockville Centre, New York.
He entered flight school in Pensacola Florida and
became a Naval Aviator on 14 June 57. After
receiving jet training in Memphis, TN he received
orders to El Toro Air Station to squadron VMFA
311. While serving at El Toro, he served as aide
to Generals Frederick E. Leek and Charles Quilter
(1966). Highlights of his flying career includes;
flying several types of jets including the
Phantom. He served two tours in Vietnam,
1964-1965 and 1968-1969. After his second tour in
Vietnam, he transitioned to helicopters and from
April 1970- Oct. 1971 served as Executive Officer
and Commanding Officer of HMH-362(the Ugly
Angels), a CH-53 squadron. During the period
1972-1974, he was a CH-46 test pilot at MCAS
Cherry Point Reworks Facility. Major Wiley retired
from the US Marine Corps in 1976,
He was a school teacher and taught science at
Jacksonville Jr. High and science and math teacher
at Trexler Middle School. He retired in June 1998.
Beginning at age 26 while stationed at MCAS
Beaufort, SC he began officiating high school
basketball and football. Upon arriving in Onslow
County he continued officiating basketball until
1995 and in 1996 with his good friend Chuck Henry
as line judge, he officiated his last football
game. In the early years of his Marine Corps
career he was an avid volleyball player but in
1959 while stationed at Atsuga Japan he fell and
hurt his knee. Since he was unable to play the
game he became an official. He officiated at local
high schools, colleges and national volleyball
tournaments. As he grew older he told the
scheduler that he would be available only if it
was an emergency, there were many more
emergency calls, but in 2013 at Northside Middle
School he officiated his last volleyball game. He
was 80 years young!
He was most proud of participating and officiating
at two Special Olympics World Games: 1999 at
Chapel Hill and 2003 in Ireland. He served as
president of New River Officials 1975-1076, was a
member of the Over 40 Softball League for 15
years, served on the North Carolina Volleyball
Officials' Board, served for 10 years as USA
Volleyball Referees' Chairman, Umpired 5
Exhibition softball games between The King and his
Court vs US Marines at Camp Lejeune.
Those left to cherish his memory are: Gloria, his
wife, (married 7-20-1957) daughters (all living in
Jacksonville) Sharon Wiley Cornwall (Gerald),
Karen M. Wiley, and Laura Wiley Smith (Michael),
two grandsons, Mason Alexander Russell and
Raymond Michael Smith Wiley. Four younger
sisters Gladys Bone of Cheney, Washington,
Susan Mullen of Joppa, Maryland, Kathie Wolland
of Westhampton Beach, NY and Judith Lunn of
Silver Springs, MD., and many loved nieces,
nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 11
am at Infant of Prague Catholic Church with Father
Jeffery Bowker officiating, burial will follow in
Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with
military honors. The family will receive friends
Tuesday 5-8 pm at Jones Funeral Home. In lieu of
flowers, memorial may be made to The Camp
Lejeune Fisher House, 4 Recovery Way, CLNC,
28547, and Infant of Prague Catholic Church 214
Marine Blvd. Jacksonville, NC 28540.
