More detail on this person: Major William David Weissinger (Ret.) was a veteran who served a wartime tour of duty in Vietnam in the Army 1st Aviation Brigade as an aircraft commander in the 119th Assault Helicopter Company from 1967-1968. He was awarded a Purple Heart, a Silver Star, and The Distinguished Flying Cross. He continued his military career as a helicopter instructor pilot in Ft. Rucker, Alabama; with a tour of duty in South Korea; and as a flight safety officer in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. After separating from the Army at the rank of Captain, he moved to Texas, continuing his military service in the Army Reserves and retiring at the rank of Major. Also at that time, he began working for MacDonnell-Douglas at NASA-JSC, where he was hired on a contract to support the early years of the Space Shuttle Program as part of the planning and support team for Mission Control, working in Mission Control on the very first Space Shuttle flight. He continued his work on another contract at NASA as a Lockheed-Martin employee. Dave enjoyed riding motorcycles, volunteering as an advocate for disabled veterans, and the fellowship of his friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne (Barnes) Weissinger; his father, William Wood Weissinger; his stepmother, Carolyn (Woodfin) Weissinger; and his sister Carolyn Virginia "Ginger" (Weissinger) Wilson. He is survived by two children: Elizabeth "Beth" Karole Weissinger and William David Weissinger, Jr.; a grandson, Christopher Devin Weissinger; and a sister, Frances (Weissinger) Pearce. He will be mis3sed.
