passed away at the Truman Memorial Veterans'
Hospital in Columbia on Wednesday, March 25,
2015.
Gary will be interred at the Missouri Veterans
Cemetery in Jacksonville.
Gary was born Nov. 19, 1937, in St. Louis. He was
a 1955 graduate of Glasgow High School, where he
played basketball for the Yellowjackets. He earned
his Bachelor of Science degree from Troy State
University in 1972.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a medic
with the 7th Special Forces Group. After
graduating from officer candidate school, he was
commissioned a second lieutenant and served with
the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in
1966-1967. Gary went to flight school, and during
his second tour of Vietnam he was a captain with
the Warlords as an AH-1G Cobra pilot. He was a
recipient of the Bronze Star and also received the
Air Medal nine times.
After leaving the Army in 1972, he flew tourist
rides in Branson with Ozark Helicopters. He began
flying offshore for Petroleum Helicopters Inc. in
Louisiana in 1975. He retired to the Columbia area
in 1992.
Gary was a lifetime member of the Special Forces
Association. He also belonged to the Vietnam
Helicopter Pilots Association. He was a Mason and
Shriner in the Columbia area.
He married Sarah Charline Adams on Aug. 21,
1960, and she survives.
He is also survived by a brother, Kevin Wineteer
of Fulton; his children, Michael Wineteer, Michele
Wineteer Thibodeaux and Sabra Wineteer and her
husband, Philip Osburn; grandchildren Nicole
Starnes (Michael), Matthew Wineteer, Schaefer
Thibodeaux, Isaac Osburn, Samara Osburn and
Shoshana Osburn; great-grandchildren Alyssa
Starnes and Gabriel Starnes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth
and Bertha Wineteer, and a brother, Ken Wineteer.
