More detail on this person: LTC William P. (Bill) Stewart USA (Ret), 87, of Colonial Heights, Virginia. Born May 26, 1931 in the Hill Country town of Utopia, Texas. He was preceded in death by parents Guy and Roberta Stewart and his sister, Elizabeth Hooser. He was a graduate of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. Following his graduation from St. Mary's, he began a career in service to his country. He began his military career in the Field Artillery, training soldiers in Hokkaido, Japan during the Korean War. Transitioning to aviation, he served two tours with the First Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War. In his first tour he served as a helicopter gunship pilot, and was a recipient of the Air Medal for heroism when the unit his craft was escorting came under attack. During his second tour he flew fixed-wing aircraft where he served as the pilot for General Creighton Abrams, commander of military operations in Vietnam, and other dignataries. Throughout his career he received numerous commendations and achieved the status of Master Aviator. Mr. Stewart retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after more than 20 years of service. After his retirement from the Army, he worked for the Quartermaster School at Fort Lee Virginia. He was a member of the American Legion Post 284, Vietnam Helicopter Pilot Association, U.S. Army Mohawk Association, and Petersburg Pilot's Association. LTC Stewart was enthralled with anything relating to automobiles, aviation, and military history. He was an avid reader, enjoyed hanging out with his buddies at the American Legion, and relished in whiskey and wine tastings. Above all, he was a selfless provider for his family and nothing pleased him more than spending time with his cat, Lucky and family, supporting in any way needed and helping them achieve their goals. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, LTC Liz Stewart USA (Ret); son, William Guy Stewart of Colonial Heights, Virginia; daughter, Judith; his son-in-law; 2 grandchildren; brother-in-law, Tony Bistransky; and other extended family members and many friends. Per LTC Stewart's request, a memorial service will not take place locally. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
