More detail on this person: Thomas "Tom" Phelps was a devoted father, husband, brother, and friend. He left this world on July 28, 2023, at the age of 78. He leaves behind his wife, Sandra Nicholson; daughter, Katherine Phelps; and brother, Robert Phelps. He was born to Sue Phelps and Joseph Phelps on October 4, 1944, in Gulfport, MS. He graduated from Pass Christian High School and attended college at, The University of Southern Mississippi. He enjoyed various activities such as fishing, swimming, skin diving, horseback riding, and above all, flying. Tom got his private license during his second year in college and flew every chance he could. He felt the demand for pilots was arising and ended up enlisting in 1966 for the Army Warrant Officer Aviation Program for helicopter training. Tom was in the 162nd Assault Helicopter Company where he first fought in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross on September 28, 1968. Tom continued his service and was released from active duty in April 1970. He was employed in his father's retail business from 1970 to 1988. Tom never met a stranger as he went on to be a sales representative. He always loved telling a good story and he had many stories. For the past 16 years, he was a volunteer tour guide at the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum. His other calling was ushering, and he was an usher at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church for several years. Tom will be missed by many as he was a great friend to any and everyone.
