More detail on this person: Arthur Moen Obituary U.S. Army LT. COL. (ret) Arthur D. Moen, 92, died Friday, January 14, 2022, in Yorktown, VA. Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 3, 1929. He attended University of Omaha in Omaha, NE. He was drafted into the US Army in 1950 at the rank of private 1st class. In 1951 he was accepted into the Army's first Warrant Officer's class for transportation pilots. Upon completing the class, he was assigned to the Army's 6th Transportation Company. With the 6th Company he piloted the first Korean combat missions with the Army's then, newly developed H-19 transport helicopter in 1953. He received the Meritorious Achievement Medal for his participation in this conflict. As an instructor pilot, he participated in the first landing of the Army's H-34 helicopter on top of Pike's Peak, elevation 10,000 ft in Colorado. He went on to serve two tours in Vietnam (1965, 1967) piloting the HU-1 Huey helicopter. He served in the 7-17th Air Cavalry and the 48th Assault Helicopter Co. During his military career he earned over 30 air medals, including many meritorious and one for heroism. He retired honorably from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1973. After his military retirement he had a second 20 year career with Virginia Employment Commission. The family expresses it's gratitude to the staff of Hamilton Assisted Living for lovingly caring for Arthur during his final years. He is predeceased by his parents, Fern & Arthur I. Moen and one son Paul Moen. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Arloha of Yorktown; his brother Don Moen and sister Helen Orme; son Armin Glore, partner Diane Danks, grandsons Aaron, Andrew, and Alan Glore, daughter Colette Cogliandro and spouse Sanny, grandchildren J. Lucas and Anna Cogliandro; son Jaye Moen, spouse Marina, grandsons Adrian and Darren; son Ty Moen and spouse Nancy, granddaughter Katy Lynne; and also 4 great grandchildren. Services on Wednesday, Feb 2, 2022, 11:30 am at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Grafton, VA 23692, graveside with full Military Honors 2:00 pm at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. Donations to Wounded Warriors Project in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, VA.
