More detail on this person: Award winning author and Army helicopter pilot H. Morgan "Morg" Miller III of Borrego Springs, California, died early Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 03:30 AM local time at the San Diego VA Hospital. He was recovering from abdominal surgery when he came down with COVID which, a few days later, was followed by a fatal cardiac event. Morg had grown up in Lakeside, California. Drafted at 25 years old and then inducted into the Army on July 30, 1968, he decided to enter the Army Aviation training program. After graduating with his classmates in class 69-31 he would end up in Vietnam assigned to A Troop of 3/17 Cavalry based at DiAn with operations out of Soc Trang and Quan Loi. Working his way through the Huey (slicks) and then Kiowa (scouts) and ending up in the Cobra (gun) platoon he quickly rose to become the troop's AH-1G maintenance officer and test pilot as "Silver Spur 8A" while still occasionally flying combat missions as "Silver Spur 37". Upon return to civilian life in 1971 he spent a few years working toward a career in aviation. A change in direction and focus led to Morg becoming a small business owner in Poway, CA. It would not be uncommon to see one of Morg's cars like his 1965 white Porsche 356 SC parked outside his Poway Liquor and Deli store on a sunny day. In December of 2023 his award winning memoir focusing on his Army experience, Drafted: My Year In Vietnam, was published and became the bestselling book ever for the publisher W. Brand Publishing. His wife and "wingman" Ginger, had worked with Morg to complete the memoir with the same determination and focus that characterized Morg's journey through life's various challenges. As a friend to many and mentor to young folks benefiting from his many lessons learned, Morg will always be remembered for his courage, persistence and resilience with a touch of humor, which blossomed during his Vietnam tour as an Army Aviator.
