More detail on this person: John William Lauterbach, Jr. Colonel U.S. Army (Retired) Of Alexandria, VA, 93, died November 20, 2017 at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Nikki, and his son, Sterling (Tripp) William Lauterbach and was preceded in death by his son Stephen John Lauterbach and his daughter, Kimberly Ann Lauterbach. Colonel Lauterbach was born October 7, 1924, in Borup, Minnesota but was raised in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. He graduated from the Redwood Falls High School with honors and attended the University of Minnesota for one year of pre-med school. He subsequently received an appointment at the U.S. Army Military Academy at West Point in 1944 and was commissioned from that school into the U.S. Army Infantry in 1947. While in the Infantry, he was assigned to units in Germany, Taiwan and the United States. He then completed flight training and completed two combat tours in Viet Nam including one as a Battalion Commander. He is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS and the National War College, Ft. McNair, Washington, DC. The burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, October 31 at 11 a.m..
