More detail on this person: CW4 (Retired) Ulyses (Lam) Lamkin went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 16, 2018. He was born in Luling, Texas, on June 15, 1930. He is the eldest of four sons to the late Joseph and Lillian (Lady Bird) Lamkin. Lam is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Joe Allen, Zedic, Preston (P.L.) and daughter Milyse. Lam graduated from high school in Luling, Texas and shortly thereafter, joined the United States Army. Enlisting in November 1948, Lam quickly ascended through the enlisted ranks where ultimately he landed in flight school. A career soldier, he received numerous medals and awards most notably: Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service medal, Air Medal with 37 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal. As an Aviator Army Helicopter Pilot, he was awarded the George T. Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States Army Black Aviation Association, Inc. He was also inducted into the Black Aviators Hall of Fame. He was an instructor for Flight Safety International. Lam received many other awards, certificates, and medals during his career with the United States Army. Lam was an active member of Second Baptist Church. He served on the Senior Usher Board until his prevented him from serving. He was a dedicated member of the Flotilla Boating and Fishing Club for almost 40 years, holding many offices including that of Commodore. Lam leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved wife Bettye; sons: Alfred (Sally), David, Vernon, Ulyses (Magdalena), Kenneth, Kevin (Nancy), and "BABY BOY RUFUS"; daughters: Edith, Carletta, Lillian, Rosalind, Debra (Mike), and Gayle (John); numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, along with a host of relatives and friends.
