More detail on this person: James Howard Kenton, a devoted soldier, loving grandfather, and lifelong adventurer, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Walla Walla, Washington, Jim pursued his passion for the world around him by studying geography at Washington State University. His sense of duty and courage led him to proudly serve his country, flying Cobra helicopters and acting as a flight instructor during two tours in Vietnam. During this time he was awarded Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Broze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. When he returned he earned his Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. After twenty years of service to the United States Army, Jim retired to fly for Carey Paul and First Financial Management Corporation. In his retirement, Jim remained an active part of his community, serving as President of the Fairways of Canton Golf Association. He found joy in life's simpler pleasures- playing golf and tennis, traveling with his partner Mary, and spending time with his daughter and grandsons at his lake cabin. His life was marked by deep integrity, curiosity, and a steady, quiet strength that touched all who knew him. He is survived by his partner, Mary Martin; his daughter, Rebecca Kenton; his son-in-law, Omar Ortiz; and his grandchildren, Henry Ortiz-Kenton and Otis Ortiz-Kenton. A service to honor James's life will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA July 15, 2025 at 9:15 am. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made to the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran's Program, a cause close to James's heart.
